So were you actually thankful?
You did know that's the purpose of Thanksgiving, right?
So here I was, relaxing on the couch watching the football game after the meal that I ate for Thanksgiving. As a family tradition, all relatives go to my grandmother's house to have Thanksgiving dinner. As usual, there was tons of food there and everyone had their fill. After that, everyone lays down on the couches. Some fall asleep, some loosen their belt etc. Its almost as if an atomic bomb dropped in that apartment :-P. So as I'm sitting there, I look around and ask myself "Is anyone here really thankful?"
We all say we are, but how many of us really are thankful? I know I was thankful. I was thankful for the food. I didn't have to eat Aramark food for a change! Interestingly enough, for the last few years I've been eating less and less food. In the past I used to eat lots of food, like most people do. This year I think I only ate one plateful. I'm not saying that you shouldn't enjoy your food, but can we who stuff our faces past contentment be genuinely thankful? I'm not too sure about that.
I remember on the train ride to my grandmother's apartment thinking of those affected by Hurricane Katrina and Rita, and realized a lot of those probably didn't get to enjoy the same type of Thanksgiving dinner. Some of those affected are dead and can't even enjoy a dinner, and that's sad. Very sad indeed. So I was thankful I could just spend time with family. The time there was fun. I got to play with my little cousins who I haven't seen in a while. I was especially happy to see my baby cousin who, when I left for college this semester, was first starting to learn how to walk. She would keep getting up, but then fall shortly afterwards. Now she can walk, and even run, in her own beautiful way. Its funny seeing toddlers walk, they walk with their legs spread out so that they don't fall.
Its saddening to here people sometimes say "Oh no, its Thanksgiving, I have to see relatives :-(." Or sometimes they say "My Thanksgiving was fun, except there were just too many relatives". I don't know what issues you may have with your family, but be thankful that you have family to visit in the first place. They might not be the greatest people in the world to be around, but some people didn't even have that option to even eat with family this Thanksgiving. Be thankful, I sure was. Were you?
